Riccardo Chailly, Music Director of the Teatro alla Scala, will replace famed conductor Zubin Mehta for the live-streamed performance of Richard Strauss’ “Salome” on Feb. 20, 2021.

Per an official press release, Mehta was discharged from the hospital on Jan. 15 in good health and there was hope that the conductor would be able to perform in the concert as expected. However, medical professionals suggested caution due to the conductor’s accumulated fatigue over the last few days, and the company ultimately decided it was best to let Chailly take over the performance.

Zubin Mehta was taken to the hospital after he felt sick during a rehearsal of “Salome” on Feb. 13.

The performance of Strauss’ “Salome” will star Elena Stikhina in the title role, Wolfgang Koch, Gerhard Siegel, Linda Watson, and Attilio Glaser, and is set to be streamed on Feb. 20, 2021.
