Report Reveals Unfavorable Working Conditions at Des Moines Metro Opera

By Francisco Salazar

The Des Moines Metro Opera is being accused of excessively long hours.

A six-article report by the Des Moines Register reported that the company’s work practices featured long work hours and “grueling conditions.” According to the report, workers had 89.5-hour workweeks and 14-hour days. The company was also reported not give overtime pay to its workers, and staff were forced to work in warehouses that exceeded temperatures of 100, among many others.

The report noted that workers confronted general and artistic director Michael Egel over the course of two hours and Egel’s responses included, “I can’t come up with solutions,” “I know very little about production,” and “I don’t know what goes into your job.”
