On Sept. 28, the Metropolitan Opera is set to open Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov.”

The company will revive Stephen Wadsworth’s celebrated 2010 production which saw the Met perform the 1875 version of the opera. It was broadcast live in cinemas with critics noting the production was “coherent and strong.”

This season the company has made modifications to the production as it will present the original 1869 version, which runs two-and-a-quarter hours with no intermission.

René Pape returns to the production he created reprising his signature role of Boris. When Pape first performed the role in 2010 critics raved stating, “René Pape sings and acts with extraordinary commitment, his powerful voice conveying every nuance of Boris’ emotions.”

He will be joined by David Butt Philip, Maxim Paster, Aleksey Bogdanov, Ain Anger, and Ryan Speedo Green. Sebastian Weigle conducts the work.

“Boris Godunov” will be performed six times with the Oct. 9 performance broadcast live in HD.
