The Chicago Opera Theater has announced its 2020-21 season, which will feature three Chicago premieres.

“The 21st century has redefined American opera through an exceptional creative surge,” said Music Director Lidiya Yankovskaya, who was at the forefront for programming for the season. “COT is quickly establishing our place at the vanguard of this movement. In our 2020-21 season, we uphold our commitment to presenting new work of many different voices, subjects, styles, and languages, alongside masterworks that have yet to be heard in Chicago.”

The season will kick off with “The Invisible City of Kitezh,” the first time in 20 years that the work appears on a North American stage. The performance will star Raquel González as well as Viktor Antipenko and David Cangelosi. Lidiya Yankovskaya conducts.

Dates: Nov. 21, 22, 2020

The season will continue with Kamala Sankaram and Jerre Dye’s “Taking Up Serpents.” The work will be directed by Alison Moritz with a cast including Alexandra Loutsion, Leah Dexter, Michael Mayes, Morgan Middleton, William Otow, and Rachel Blaustein. Lidiya Yankovskaya conducts.

Performance Dates: Feb. 20, 26, 28, 2021

Daniel Catán’s “Il Postino” will conclude the season in April with a cast including Daniel Montenegro, David Lomelí, Megan Pachecano, Sara Gartland, Kimberly Hann, Jared Esguerra, and Curtis Bannister. Iván López Reynoso conducts while Crystal Manich directs.
