Raehann Bryce-Davis, Quinn Kelsey, Will Liverman, Ana María Martínez & Christian Van Horn Lead Opera Philadelphia’s 2023-24 Season

Dubbed Festival 023, the company will bring music to venues around the city. The following productions are included in the Festival.
The world premiere of composer Rene Orth and librettist Hannah Moscovitch’s “Ten Days in a Madhouse,” starring Kiera Duffy, Will Liverman, and Raehann Bryce-Davis. Joanna Settle directs, and Daniela Candillari conducts. The work is co-commissioned and co-produced with Tapestry Opera.
Performance Dates: Sept. 21 – 30, 2023, at the Wilma Theater
Next up, is Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra.” The production includes a star-studded cast; Quinn Kelsey as the Doge and Ana María Martínez as Amelia. Joining them will be Christian Van Horn in the role of Fiesco and Richard Trey Smagur as Gabriele Adorno. Jack Mulroney Music Director Corrado Rovaris conducts.

Tenor Karim Sulayman stars in “Unholy Wars,” a show conceived and performed by Sulayman. The music of George Frideric Handel, Claudio Monteverdi, and Mary Kouyoumdjian is on the program. A contingent of Baroque music specialists, including bass-baritone John Taylor Ward and rising-star soprano Raha Mirzadegan. Dancer Coral Dolphin joins them on stage. Kevin Newbury directs, and violinist Julie Andrijeski leads the music. “Unholy Wars” is co-produced by Spoleto Festival USA and Up Until Now Collective.

Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts co-presents “Afternoons with AVA,” featuring two Saturday afternoon recitals and a midweek recital.

“Curtis Voices” featuring artists of the Curtis Opera Theatre performing in recital. The event is co-presented with Curtis Opera Theatre.

Next up is “Late Night Snacks,” in which The Bearded Ladies Cabaret returns to share a new selection of guilty pleasures, soul nourishment, and tasty cabaret treats in the annual Late Night Snacks series. Presented in partnership with The Bearded Ladies Cabaret and FringeArts.

Opera Philadelphia’s Winter and Spring lineup starts with a semi-staged production of Bologne’s “The Anonymous Lover,” starring Symone Harcum, Matthew White, Johnathan McCullough, Ashley Marie Robillard, and Joshua Blue. Dennis Whitehead Darling directs, and Jack Mulroney Music Director Corrado Rovaris conducts, with Elizabeth Braden leading the Opera Philadelphia Chorus.
Performance Dates: Feb. 2 & 4, 2024, at the Academy of Music
Rounding out the season is Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly,” which features Karen Chia-ling Ho, Anthony Ciaramitaro, Anthony Clark Evans, Kristen Choi, Julius Ahn, and Kyle Miller. Jack Mulroney Music Director Corrado Rovaris conducts, with Elizabeth Braden leading the Opera Philadelphia Chorus.
