By David Salazar

Purchase College Opera is set to present Monteverdi’s “L’Incoronazione di Poppea” this April.

There will be two casts. As Poppea, audiences will see either Zoe Brooks or Sophia Orrico. Their Nerones include Brigid Mack and James Hernandez, while the alternating Ottone interpreters include Theodore Perringtonn and Jonathan Mildner. Beyoncé Zabrano and Brigid Mack will alternate as Ottavia while Brandon Roque and Theodore Perrington will play Seneca.

Other cast members include Kierra Pizarro, Rhys Stermer, Desara Leka, Zian Taylor Jeanete Gonzalez, Nadia Alalou, Rachel Eaton, Kiera Masci, Zora Abaquin, Damian Headley, Aidan White, Maya Villanueva, Amanda Frank, Caitlin Rossbotham, Teddy Jiminez, and Saige Valentino.

“I think it is essential that our students research historical musical structures as well as the historical figures represented in the various time periods of the operatic repertoire,” said Jacque Trussel, the Stage Director of Purchase Opera, per an official press release. “In this opera we parallel Roman historical figures to current officials in our present-day political system. Time continues to enforce the idea that history and human nature never change. Our task is to portray both honestly.”

Performances are set for Thursday, April 10 through Sunday, April 13 with three of the four shows having a 7 p.m. showtime and the Sunday presentation featuring a 1 p.m. start time.
