Proposal To Name Teresa Berganza As ‘Hija Predilecta’ of Madrid Announced

By Francisco Salazar

Madrid’s mayor Manuela Carmena has announced that mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza will be declared “Hija Predilecta” of Madrid.

The proposal, which began by Daniel Bianco, director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela, will be taken to the area’s commission for approval.

Berganza is one of Spain’s most acclaimed mezzo-sopranos of her generation. She was one of the most acclaimed “Carmen” interpreters of her generation and was also known for her Rossini and Zarzuela interpretations. She was recently honored at the Opera awards for Achievement in Opera.

Born on La Calle de San Isidro Labrador in front of the Basílica de San Francisco el Grande, Berganza has always been proud of her heritage of her Spanish city.

More information will surface in the coming months as the members approve the title.
