Portland Opera to Sell its Headquarters

By Afton Wooten

Portland Opera announced on Jan. 4, 2024 that it will sell its southeast Portland headquarters building.

The Hampton Opera Center’s 44,835 square feet space has been home to the company’s administrative offices, performance space, costume shop, and rehearsal spaces since 2003. The building was purchased from KPTV for $5 million.

The sale will help alleviate the company’s debt accrued during the pandemic and since its reopening in 2021. Portland Opera reports that ticketing revenue is down by 29% over the 2018-19 season. Sue Dixon, the company’s general director, said in a press release that the sale, “will free Portland Opera from the debt of a $2.4 million lien” put on the building in 2016. It will also bolster its cash reserves and endowment.

This decision has no affect on the Opera’s current season.
