Portland Opera To Go To Feature Bilingual ‘Barber of Seville’
By David SalazarThe Portland Opera is set to give audiences a new experience of Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” in a 50-minute version in both English and Spanish.
The performances are part of the company’s Portland Opera to Go program that takes opera to schools and community centers across Portland and Southern Washington state. This year, the company will showcase close to 60 performances throughout the tour.
There will also be two public performances slated for Dec. 8 and 15 at the Hampton Opera Center. There will also be other public performances on Nov. 12 and 17 at the Tigard Public Library and Chehalem Cultural Center, respectively.
“I truly believe that Portland Opera to Go is one of the most important things we do at Portland Opera,” Portland Opera General Director Christopher Mattaliano stated in a press release. “I’m thrilled that this production will bring the magic of opera to thousands of audience members, many of whom will be enjoying the live performance of opera for the first time.”
In this new version of the opera, Rosina only speaks in Spanish, while Almaviva only speaks in English, creating a language barrier for the two. Figaro however helps them find a way to fall in love. The version is aimed at students between third and 12th grade.
The cast will feature Thomas Cilluffo as Almaviva, Jorge-Phillipe Belonni Rosario as Figaro, Jessica Blau as Rosina, and Sergio Manzo as Dr. Bartolo. The cast will be accompanied by Emily Baltzer on piano. Stephen K. Gardner will be the Tour Manager, and Mattaliano will direct.
