Plácido Domingo Speaks About Current Wars & Music as a Unifier
By Francisco SalazarPlácido Domingo is giving his opinion on the current wars in Ukraine and the Palestine and Gaza war.
The singer, who has been quiet regarding the current wars, told La Razon that his opinion didn’t matter.
He said, “My opinion is useless and won’t change anything. What counts are the human beings, and above all the children who suffer and die even today, in 2025. We listen to the news, but we’ve become deaf to the pain. What good does it do to comment on these tragedies, or to take sides? It only fosters more division and generates more hatred.”
The tenor continued by recounting his visits to Israel, Ukraine, and Russia and noted that music is a way to unite and create dialogue. He said, “In 1962, Marta and I, newlyweds, spent two and a half years in Israel, singing at the Israel National Opera in Tel Aviv. Back then, everything was relatively peaceful… and on Sundays we went to Mass in a Catholic church on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. I’ve also sung in Russia many times, for the first time during the Teatro alla Scala tour in Moscow in the 1970s. I’ve also had the privilege of singing in Ukraine before very enthusiastic audiences. You can’t imagine how many friends and colleagues I’ve had and have in all these countries and of all religions. My Operalia competition has always welcomed singers from all over the world, because music is a universal language. Nothing can replace diplomacy and political mediation, but I am convinced that music can open doors, make the differences between people less radical, and create a more conducive environment for dialogue.”
Domingo was recently announced as the 2025 Premio Faraglioni Capri and is set to perform in Bulgaria and Poland in the next month.
