Plácido Domingo Cancels Batuta Prize Attendance

By Francisco Salazar

Plácido Domingo will no longer attend the Batuta Prize in Mexico.

The opera star announced that he will not attend with organizers stating he “deeply regret (his) absence.”

The news broke on Thursday Oct. 3 just days after resigning as general director of the Los Angeles Opera.

The Organizers of this weekend’s Batuta Prizes in Mexico also noted that they hope the “situation to be cleared up for the benefit of all parties involved.”

Domingo was to be honored with other “great masters” of classical music at a concert-gala Saturday Oct. 5, 2019 in the capital.

The opera star recently retired from the Metropolitan opera and resigned from the LA Opera after 20 women alleged he sexually harassed them. The allegations have brought a mixed response in the opera world with European companies fully supporting Domingo and more than 50 colleagues, opera stars and industry professionals coming to his support.

Domingo has stated he is working to clear his name and is set to return to the stage for a sold-out performance at the Opernhaus Zurich in the title role of Verdi’s “Nabucco.”
