Pittsburgh Opera to Present ‘Animated Arias’

By David Salazar

Pittsburgh Opera has announced its “Animated Arias” special live concert on Oct. 14, 2022.

The event, which takes place at Point Park University’s Pittsburgh Playhouse starting at 7:30 p.m., will be a collaboration between Pittsburgh Opera and the Cinema Arts Department of the university. Students will design and create six animated video shorts based on select arias and sections from renowned operas by such composers as Mozart, Verdi, and Dvorák, among others.

Students will also discuss their works and creative process during the event.

The goal is for the videos to “introduce opera to new audiences who might otherwise feel opera is ‘not for them’ while simultaneously inviting opera aficionados to look at opera in a new lens, explore the magic of animation, and inspire joy at viewing these well-loved pieces in a new context,” said Rebekah Diaz, Pittsburgh Opera’s Director of Community Engagement and IDEA Initiatives, in an official press statement.
