Piotr Buszewski, Christiane Libor & Tomasz Konieczny Lead Oper Leipzig’s 2023-24 Season

Germany’s Oper Leipzig has announced its 2023-24 season featuring five new productions.

Premieres

Peter Maxwell Davies’s “Majesty and Madness” will be presented in a production by Marlene Hahn. Samuel Emanuel conducts a cast that includes Marie-Luise Dreßen and Franz Xaver Schlecht.

Performance Dates: Sept. 21-24, 2023

Mozart’s “Die Zauberflote” will be conducted by Jonathan Darlington, Ivan Repušić, Christoph Gedschold, and Matthias Foremny. Matthias Davids directs the new production which will star Randall Jakobsh, Yorck Felix Speer, David Fischer, Matthias Stier, Sven Hjörleifsson, Julia Sitkovetsky, Gloria Rehm, Samantha Gaul, Olena Tokar, Jonathan Michie, and Franz Xaver Schlecht.

Performance Dates: Oct. 28, 2023-March 16, 2024

Thea Musgrave’s “Mary, Queen of Scots” will star Nicole Chevalier, Franz Xaver Schlecht, Sven Hjörleifsson, Rupert Charlesworth, Sejong Chang, Randall Jakobsh, Guido Jentjens, Richard Morrison, and Dan Karlström. Matthias Foremny conducts the production by Ilaria Lanzino.

Performance Dates: Dec. 16, 2023-Feb. 11, 2024

Solen Mainguené, Tobias Schabel, Mathias Hausmann, and Olga Jelínková star in Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier.” Christoph Gedschold conducts the new production by Michael Schulz.

Performance Dates: March 30-May 12, 2024

Christoph Gedschold conducts Shostakovich’s “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” in a new production by Francisco Negrin. Randall Jakobsh, Matthias Stier, Annemarie Kremer, and Brenden Gunnel star.

Romy Sarakacianis leads “Clara and Fanny” with a cast that includes Fanny Sandra Maxheimer and Romy Sarakacianis.

Christina Geißler conducts Amadeus Musikus. Friedrich Praetorius and Franz Xaver Schlecht star.

Britten’s “Peter Grimes” will star Brenden Gunnell, Orford Martina Welschenbach, Tuomas Pursio, and Mathias Hausmann.  Matthias Foremny conducts.

Christiane Libor, Ulrike Schneider, Daniel Frank, Marke Egils Silins, and Mathias Hausmann star in Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde.” Christoph Gedschold conducts.

Performance Dates: Nov. 5-Feb. 10, 2024

Sarah Traubel, Olga Jelínková, and Ainhoa Garmendia lead Verdi’s “La Traviata” with Giampaolo Bisanti, Fabrizio Ventura, Stephan Zilias, Johannes Debus, Constantin Trinks, and Christoph Gedschold conducting. Matthias Stier, Eduardo Aladrén, Ovidiu Purcel, Franz Xaver Schlecht, and Mathias Hausmann round out the principal cast.

Leonard Evers’ “Gold” will star Nora Steuerwald, Dirk Richter, Sebastian Linz, and Levin Fischer. Christina Geißler conducts.

“Die Walküre” is set to star Sabine Hogrefe, Simone Schneider, Kathrin Göring, Yorck Felix Speer, and Tomasz Konieczny. Ulf Schirmer conducts.

Karine Babajanyan and Dinara Alieva sing the title role of Puccini’s “Tosca.” The cast will also include Andrea Shin, Gaston Rivero, Tuomas Pursio, and Ólafur Sigurdarson.
