Phoenix Symphony’s Board of Directors, Staff & Musicians Meet In Attempt to Salvage Suspended Season
By David SalazarRepresentatives of the Phoenix Symphony’s Board of Directors, staff and musicians came together for a meeting on Nov. 2 in an attempt to discuss the orchestra’s future.
The musicians, represented by Local 586 of the American Federation of Musicians, discussed, along with other participants, the fundraising progress made over the past week and a plan to resume performances, possibly as soon as this month. The three groups also agreed to collaborate on fundraising to support the Symphony.
Per the statement issued by all participants, the meeting ended with a feeling of encouragement with the conversation characterized as respectful, constructive, and with a “spirit of cooperation.”
The Symphony had previously stated that it would suspend its season following its Nov. 1 performance with musicians laid off starting on Nov. 2 due to financial shortfall.
“This is the most difficult decision this Board has faced, and we did not make it lightly,” said Mo Stein, Chairman of the Board of The Phoenix Symphony, back when the announcement to suspend the season was made. “We have diligently pursued measures to close the gap between operating costs and revenues, and our efforts have not yet been enough. Continuing the season without the cash flow to meet our immediate obligations would put the institution’s future at greater risk. Our responsibility now is to minimize further losses, create a robust restructuring plan and build a financial foundation that will last.”
