Calgary Opera is set to open its 2024-25 season with Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.”

The performances which will be held from November 2 to 8, 2024 at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, will be directed by Canadian Anna Theodosakis and conducted by Jonathan Brandani.

In the new production, Theodosakis challenges the audience to confront the more unsettling aspects of the story, focusing on the impact of Giovanni’s actions from the perspective of those he wrongs. In a statement, the director said, “I want to focus on the bravery of the women in the story. Donna Anna, Donna Elvira, and Zerlina each resist in unique ways, and I’m eager to highlight their musical and dramatic nuances.”

The cast will include baritone Phillip Addis, who has performed the role of Don Giovanni in Edmonton, bass-baritone Guido Loconsolo as Leporello, sopranos Midori Marsh and Aviva Fortunata as Donna Anna and Donna Elvira, Christina Thanisch-Smith as Zerlina, bass-baritone Neil Craighead as Masetto and The Commendatore, and tenor Chuan Wang as Don Ottavio.

The season will also include “Don Pasquale” and “Bluebeard’s Castle.”
