Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale has named Nicholas McGegan to the position of Music Director Emeritus.

McGegan led the ensemble from 1985 to 2020, producing 40 recordings and nearly 1,000 performances in that span.

In his new role, he will lead a series of performances in January and February of next season. He will also be honored in the ensemble’s Spring Gala on April 10, 2026.

“How delighted I am to be returning to conduct PBO on a regular basis, and next season’s concerts include some of my favourite music too,” said McGegan per an official press release. “I love Rameau, and the orchestra is well-versed in this magical repertoire. It will be a decade since we performed ‘Le Temple de la Gloire,” Rameau’s wonderful opera with a libretto by Voltaire. Also, I am looking forward to taking part in the Jews & Music series with my great friend Francesco Spagnolo. We will have a lot of fun.”

Richard Egarr, who took over for McGegan between 2020-24, will be given the title of Music Director Laureate. The organization will announce its next Music Director in the not-so-distant future.
