By David Salazar

As November gets started, we look at a weekend packed with repertory that you don’t get a chance to see every day. So without further ado, here are top five operas to see this weekend.

La Serva Padrona – The Lighthouse Opera Company, Bronx, NY

The Bronx-based opera company will showcase the rare Pergolesi opera at Opera America with a cast that includes soprano Pamela Jones and bass-baritone Daniel Klein. The production, which will be directed by John Tedeschi and conducted by Stephen Francis Vasta, will feature two performances on Friday and Saturday; the latter performance will be a gala presentation.

Dead Man Walking – Lyric Opera of Chicago, Illinois

On Saturday, Jake Heggie’s masterpiece gets a revival starring Patricia Racette, Susan Graham, Ryan McKinny, Whitney Morrison, Clay Hilley, and Gordon Hawkins. Nicole Paiement conducts a production by Leonard Foglia. “Dead Man Walking” is becoming a major repertory staple and a must-see opera.

Maria, Regina D’Inghilterra – Odyssey Opera, Boston, Massachussetts

On Friday and Sunday, Pacini’s take on Queen Mary I will make its premiere. Amy Shoremount will take on the title role with Alisa Jordheim, Kameron Lopreore, Leroy Davis, James Demier, and Katherine Maysek starring. Steve Maier directs and Gil Rose conducts. This opera is rarely ever performed, making this an opportunity you can’t miss.

Madama Butterfly – Opera Omaha, Nebraska

For those seeking out some traditional repertory, Opera Omaha will open its season with Puccini’s classic on Friday and Sunday after celebrating a special day. It was announced earlier this week that the mayor of Omaha has declared Nov. 1, 2019 Opera Omaha Day and the performance of “Butterfly” will be preceded by a community celebration co-presented by OPERA America.

The production will star Karah Son in the title role with Alok Kumar as Pinkerton, Robin Yujoong Kim as Goro, Kristen Choi as Suzuki, Luis Ledesma as Sharpless, and Hidenori Inoue as the Bonze. Joseph Rescigno conducts a production directed by Leslie Swackhamer.

Missing – Pacific Opera Victoria, British Colombia, Canada

On Friday and Saturday, Pacific Opera Victoria will present the opera by Marie Clemens and composer Brian Current with a cast that includes Joanna Diindiiskwe Simmons, Caitlin Wood, Heather Molloy, Jan an der Hooft, Marion Newman, Kyle Lehmann, and Rose-Ellen Nichols.
