Pasadena Chorale to Present Despez’s ‘Pange Lingua’ Mass
By David SalazarThe Pasadena Chorale is set to present Josquin Desprez’s “Pange Lingua” Mass on March 4 and 5, 2023.
The showcase, which will take place at Altadena Community Church, will also feature a setting of the “Pange Lingua” hymn by composer Paul Gibson as well as Josquin’s “Ave Maria” and a number of other selections featuring Student Singers.
“Josquin’s ‘Pange Lingua’ Mass is a gorgeous and astonishing piece, a tapestry woven with human voices and no instruments,” said Pasadena Chorale founding artistic director Jeffrey Bernstein in an official press statement. “At the Altadena Church our audience will feel almost as if they’re inside the music.”
Bernstein also compared a Josquin mass setting to a symphony by Beethoven or a film score by Hans Zimmer.
“A great emotional journey crafted by a composer at the height of his powers. It’s a feast for the ears and the soul,” he concluded.
