The Paris Opera has announced that both opera houses will close for a period of renovation.

The company said that the Palais Garnier, which is almost 150-years-old, will close in mid-2027 for a two-year renovation. Then the Opera Bastille, which opened in 1989, will close from mid-2030.

The renovation of the two will cost at least 200 million euros by 2030 and the closure schedule will have one stage open while the other works will be performed elsewhere in France and the city during this period. In a statement, the company said that both opera houses need work to “modernize their stage infrastructure.”

In a report last week, the Court of Accounts said that both buildings were “aging” and had been the victims of “long-standing underfunding.”

The Paris Opera is currently performing “La Fille du Regiment” and “The Magic Flute.”
