Ópera en Movimiento A.C. will present “History of Mexican Opera,” an international live online course taught in English by opera researcher and producer César Octavio Moreno Zayas, beginning Oct. 2.

Across six sessions, held live on Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon Mexico City time, the course will trace the development of opera in Mexico from the New Spain period to the contemporary era. Topics include the Baroque and early nineteenth century, the influence of international opera companies in nineteenth century Mexico, Mexican composers of the nineteenth century, post revolutionary nationalism, later experimental currents, and the expansion of Mexican opera in the twenty first century.

There will be an exploration of repertoire by Melesio Morales, Carlos Chávez, Daniel Catán and Federico Ibarra, among other composers with recordings and digital materials included with the course.
