ORF III to Broadcast Kristine Opolais & Jonas Kaufmann’s ‘Tosca’

By Francisco Salazar

ORF III is set to broadcast Puccini’s “Tosca” on August 22 from the Graz Schloßbergbühne Kasematten.

The broadcast will star Jonas Kaufmann, Kristīne Opolais, and Sir Bryn Terfel, who will be joined by the Grazer Philharmoniker, the Grazer Opernchor, and the Singschul of the Graz Opera. Marcus Merkel will conduct the semi-staged production.

In a statement, Grazer Spielstätten Managing Director Bernhard Rinner said, “There are many parallels between the opera ‘Tosca’ and the Schloßbergbühne Kasematten. Above all, the romantic, almost mystical flair of the former castle on our local mountain can be found in Puccini’s masterpiece – ‘Tosca’ also plays on a legendary castle, the Castel Sant’Angelo. I am delighted and at the same time a little proud that together we have succeeded in bringing this star cast with Kaufmann, Terfel, and Opolais to Graz!”

The opera will be performed on August 22 and 24 and will reunite Opolais and Kaufmann, who first performed together in 2015 in “Manon Lescaut.”
