Operalia Competition Announces 2024 Winners

The Operalia Competition has announced its 2024 winners.

The first prize went to American Soprano Kathleen O’Mara and Chinese bass-baritone Le Bu. Both first-prize winners also won the Birgit Nilsson Prize.

The second prize was awarded to Azerbaijan mezzo-soprano Elmina Hasan and American tenor Angel Romero. Hasan also won the Pepita Embil Prize of Zarzuela and Romero won the Don Plácido Domingo Ferrer Prize of Zarzuela.

The third prize saw ties in the female category. The female category saw American mezzo-sopranos Sun-Ly Pierce, Meridian Prall, and Russian soprano Polina Shabunina win the award. Finally, the male winner was Russian baritone Vladislav Chizhov.

The Rolex Prize of the Audience went to mezzo-soprano Hasan and English baritone Jack Lee. Finally, the CulturArte Prize was awarded to New Zealand soprano Eliza Boom.

The Operalia Competition took place in Mumbai, India from Sept. 15 to Sept. 21 at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA). Established in 1993, the competition has helped launch the careers of many singers including Sonya Yoncheva, Lise Davidsen, Lisette Oropesa, Nina Stemme, Brian Jagde, Joyce DiDonato, and Rolando Villazón.
