State Opera South Australia is set to present a new production of Humperdinck’s “Hansel & Gretel” this August.

Across four performances from August 21 through 29 at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide, the world premiere production will be conducted by State Opera Artistic Director Dane Lam and directed by Constantine Costi.

The production is also set to tour Opera Hong Kong in 2027 as part of a co-production between the two companies.

The production features internationally acclaimed Korean American countertenor Kangmin Justin Kim making his Australian debut in the role of Hansel, opposite American soprano Sofia Troncoso as Gretel.

Australian mezzo-soprano Catherine Carby takes on the dual roles of the Witch and Mother, with Adelaide baritone Morgan Pearse as Peter and emerging South Australian soprano Lucy Stoddart in the dual roles of Dew Fairy and Sandman.

“Justin is one of the world’s most in-demand performers. Securing his Australian debut for Hansel & Gretel is a major coup for State Opera and South Australia. We can’t wait for audiences to experience Justin and our entire world-leading cast in this show,” Lam said per an official press release.

Performances take place August 21 – 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Her Majesty’s Theatre.
