Opera Unbound will present the world premiere of composer Roan Shankaruk’s chamber opera “The Fox,” running April 17–19, 2026 at ANNEX in Vancouver, BC.
The production marks Opera Unbound’s inaugural full-length opera staging, directed by Christopher Lam. The opera is based on D.H. Lawrence’s 1922 novella and centers on Nellie March and Jill Banford, whose isolated poultry farm is upended when a charming young soldier, Henry Grenfel, arrives.
The cast features tenor Adam Schmidt as Henry, mezzo-soprano Renee Fajardo and soprano Shankaruk alternating as Jill, and mezzo-soprano Plater as Nellie. Music Director Perri Lo conducts.
“Despite being published more than a century ago, the novella’s themes of power and subversion are still incredibly relevant and poignant to our modern life today,” said Shankaruk, per an official press release. “I was drawn to the story’s representation of diverse sexualities, which is still an uncommon narrative element in opera.”
