Tapestry Opera will present the Canadian premiere of “10 Days in a Madhouse” at the Bluma Appel Theatre next June.

The opera, written by composer Rene Orth and playwright Hannah Moscovitch, is an adaptation of Nellie Bly’s 1887 undercover investigation into the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island. It was originally commissioned by Tapestry Opera and Opera Philadelphia and in 2024 was named Best New Opera by the Music Critics Association of North America.

The opera, set for June 16 – 21, 2026, is co-presented by Luminato Festival as part of its 20th anniversary season, alongside the Canadian Opera Company, in association with TO Live.

Director Joanna Settle leads the production and Canadian Opera Company Price Family Chorus Master Sandra Horst conducts.

Canadian soprano Mireille Asselin sings Nellie while American mezzo-soprano Taylor-Alexis DuPont appears as Lizzie. Baritone Jorell Williams performs as Dr. Josiah Blackwell and Canadian soprano Lauren Pearl reprises her role as Nurse/Matron.

“’10 Days’ is a thrilling contemporary opera, and a powerful story about the trailblazing investigative journalist, Nellie Bly, brought to life by the uniquely talented duo of Hannah Moscovitch and Rene Orth,” said Tapestry Opera’s Artistic Director, Michael Mori, per an official press release. “We are proud to have commissioned this work and even prouder to collaborate with the Canadian Opera Company and Luminato Festival together for its Canadian premiere. ”

“10 Days in a Madhouse” will be performed in English with English SURTITLES™.
