Opera Santa Barbara is set to kickstart its 2021-22 season with “Cruzar la Cara de la Luna.”

The mariachi opera by José “Pepe” Martínez and Leonard Foglia will be directed by Octavio Cardenas and conducted by David Hanlon. It will star Mariachi Los Campers alongside Daniel Montenegro, Efraín Solís, Kelly Guerra, Bernardo Bermudez, Sergio Gonzalez, Jessica Gonzalez-Rodriguez, and Raphaella Medina.

The California-based opera company will kick off the run on Oct. 1, with a subsequent performance on Oct. 3. Both showcases for the mariachi opera are set to take place at the Granada Theatre and will be the first presentations by the company at the venue since November 2019.

“We are thrilled to be returning to the Granada with a work that is approachable in so many ways”, said Opera Santa Barbara Artistic and General Director Kostis Protopapas in a press release. “For us this is the time to open up our doors wide and make theater a place of healing for everyone in our community. We are all thirsty for live music and a sense of community right now, and ‘Cruzar’ is the ideal vehicle for this emotional reopening, with its signable tunes, moving story, and message of resilience and regeneration.”

Only 50 percent of the theater’s 1,500 seats will be sold for the performances.
