Opera San José to Present Tunnel of Terror

By Francisco Salazar

Opera San José and the City of San José are set to present the Tunnel of Terror, a free, family-friendly celebration taking over San José City Hall Plaza on Oct. 24.

The immersive evening will transform the city’s iconic Sonic Runway into a vibrant Halloween destination featuring live opera and popular music performances, interactive light and sound art, costume contests, community trick-or-treating, lowrider culture, street performers, local makers, and more. At the center of the evening there will be performances by Opera San José resident artists soprano Nicole Koh, mezzo-soprano Courtney Miller, and tenor Micah Perry, alongside OSJ’s Emeritus Artist-in-Residence, baritone Eugene Brancoveanu.

Performers from Children’s Musical Theater San Jose will also perform, bringing together classical opera, popular music, and theatrical performance in one eclectic Halloween program. There will be operatic favorites, musical theater hits such as some of the biggest numbers from Phantom of the Opera, to Halloween and pop-culture hits such as Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” Bobby “Boris” Pickett & The Crypt Kickers’ “Monster Mash,” and Tame Impala’s “Dracula.”

In a statement, General Director & CEO Shawna Lucey said, “Tunnel of Terror is a wonderful opportunity to bring opera and the performing arts out into the community in an unexpected and playful way. We’re excited to collaborate with the City of San José and so many incredible local partners to create an evening where families, artists, students, makers, music lovers, and the broader San José community can come together and celebrate the Halloween season.”

The evening will begin at 5 p.m. with a DJ spinning Halloween anthems, cumbia, oldies, and ambient electronic music, alongside roaming performances from Circus of Sin.
