Opera Rara to Release Recording of Mercadante’s ‘Il proscritto’

By Afton Wooten

Opera Rara is set to release the new recording of Mercadante’s “Il Proscritto.”

In 2020 Carlo Rizzi Opera Rara’s Artistic Director took to restoring the newly found signed score of Saverio Mercadante’s “Il Proscritto.” Once the project was complete leading singers Ramón Vargas, Iván Ayón-Rivas, Irene Roberts, and Elizabeth DeShong, the Opera Rara Chorus, and the Britten Sinfonia recorded the unheard opera under Rizzi’s baton. Roger Parker served as the editor on the recording.

Mercadante’s opera “Il Proscritto” had not been performed since its premiere in Naples in 1842. The story is set near Edinburgh in the first half of the 17th century during the rule of Oliver Cromwell and follows a tragic story of lost love and political treachery.

The premiere of the recording will be on Zoom on April 13 followed by the Warner Classics international release on April 14.
