Opera Philadelphia has announced the broadcast premiere of the award-winning work, “Breaking the Waves,” on May 29, 2020, as part of the company’s Digital Festival O.

The opera, which made its world premiere in 2016, adapts Lars von Trier’s 1996 film of the same name. Missy Mazzoli composed the work with a libretto by Royce Vavrek.

The Philadelphia production was directed by James Darrah and stars soprano Kiera Duffy and baritone John Moore.

When the work premiered it received the Best New Opera Award from the Music Critics Association of North America, and later made its New York debut with Beth Morrison Project’s Prototype Festival.

On the day of the digital premiere, Mazzoli, Vavrek, and Darrah will be part of a pre-broadcast conversation on “The Show Before The Show,” hosted by Frank Luzi and Sarah Williams of Opera Philadelphia. After its premiere, “Breaking the Waves” will be available on YouTube and the company’s website until August 31, 2020.
