Opera Philadelphia Offers Free Stream of ‘Composing the Future’

By David Salazar

Opera Philadelphia is now streaming “Composing the Future,” a documentary that takes a deep dive into the organization’s Composer-in-Residence Program.

The documentary brings together eight composers who participated in the program since its inception in 2011; these composers include Lembit Beecher, Courtney Bryan, David Hertzberg, David T. Little, Missy Mazzoli, Andrew Norman, Rene Orth, and Tyshawn Sorey.

Over the course of 90 minutes, these composers speak about their professional development and memories of the program in conjunction with General Director and President David B. Devan as well as Director of New Works and Creative Producer Sarah Williams.

The film also features concert performances of opera works that were performed as part of the recent March 18 concert; among the artists on that program are Lawrence Brownlee, Sharleen Joyne, Ashley Milanese, and Amanda Bottoms.

The film is free to stream on OperaPhila.tv.
