Opera Philadelphia to Celebrate Eight Composers With Special Concert

Opera Philadelphia is set to celebrate a decade of new opera with a special concert on March 18, 2023.

The showcase will bring together eight resident composers and spotlight their music. Among the composers who will be celebrated are  Lembit Beecher, Courtney Bryan, David Hertzberg, David T. Little, Missy Mazzoli, Andrew Norman, Rene Orth, and Tyshawn Sorey.

The performance will feature such artists as Lawrence Brownlee, who will take on Sorey’s “Cycles of My Being,” as well as soprano Sharlene Joynt, who will interpret Beecher’s “Sky on Wings.” Soprano Ashley Milanese will present Mazzoli’s “His name is Jan” from “Breaking the Waves,” while Amanda Bottoms will perform from Orth’s upcoming opera “10 Days in a Madhouse.”

Additionally, Aryssa Leigh Burrs will perform from Little’s “JFK,” Tiffany Townsend will present moments from Bryan’s Blessed,” while Kara Goodrich and Alek Shrader take on a duet from Norman’s “A Trip to the Moon.” Finally, Sun-Ly Pierce performs from Hertzberg’s “The Rose Elf.”
