Opera Philadelphia has named Nathalie Joachim as its Composer-in-Residence for the 2025-26 season.

Joachim, whose “Fanm d’Ayiti” received a Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album, will curate two events during the upcoming season, including an exclusive concert of her own compositions as well as another show that spotlights the artists and composers who have inspired her.

“I am thrilled to join Opera Philadelphia as Composer-in-Residence, and also to contribute to a season of exciting premieres and performances,” Joachim, whose works have been performed at the New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, the St. Louis Symphony, and the Spoleto Festival USA, among others, said in an official press release. “As a Philadelphia resident, it’s been wonderful to watch how the company has become a pioneer in the city’s cultural scene and has made opera more inclusive and accessible for the community at large. I’m honored to take part in these efforts and to have the opportunity to develop new and ambitious work.”

Joachim, who is an Assistant Professor of Composition at Princeton University, is one of 10 composers to contribute to Opera Philadelphia’s February 2026 World Premiere of “Complications in Sue” at the Academy of Music. Next February, Joachim will also showcase her “Solitude + SPACE” with the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. In June 2026, The Crossing will world premiere a new work in which she sets words from Benjamin Franklin’s “Thirteen Virtues.”

She is also a 2024-25 Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum of Modern Art.
