Opera Philadelphia Announces New ‘Pipe Up!’ Series

Opera Philadelphia has announced a new series “Pipe Up!”

The series aims to utilize the Grand Court inside the historic Wanamaker Building as an operatic space. “Pipe Up!” will see the company join forces with TF Cornerstone to bring major cultural creators and organizations into the spotlight. The series is supported by a $1 million grant from the Wycnote Foundation with additional support from TF Cornerstone  and The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

“From its history to its scale to its resonance, its legacy can make anyone who passes through feel like they are a part of something bigger,” said Anthony Roth Costanzo, the company’s General Director. “Opera is the coming together of so many art forms: music, theater, dance, fashion, and visual arts. The sum of those parts can create something no single discipline could achieve on its own.”

The series opens on Sept. 7 with “Meet Me at the Eagle.” The Opera Philadelphia Orchestra, chorus, guest singers, BalletX, The Bearded Ladies Cabaret, and FringeArts will perform.

Also on the slate is a concert curated by recently unveiled Composer-in-Residence Nathalie Joachim as well as a recital by Lawrence Brownlee.

The famed Wanamaker Grand Court Organ will also get the spotlight throughout the series. The organ was built for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair and was left in storage until 1909 when Wanamaker acquired it for his store. It got its first appearance in the building in 1911.
