Opera Orlando Announces 3 Live Opera Productions for Spring 2021

By David Salazar

Opera Orlando has announced the launch of its “Opera on the Town” series this February.

The series will feature live performances with audiences. The company revealed that it is coordinating with all venues to ensure a safe environment for all audience members in light of the continued spread of COVID-19.

The series will open with the world premiere of “Death of Ivan Ilych,” which will be produced in partnership with Thompson Street Opera Company, based on Tolstoy’s famed novella. The chamber opera was composed by John Young to a libretto by Alan Olejniczak. The work will be performed at the Orlando Museum of Art with musicians from the Alterity Chamber Orchestra.

Performance Dates: Feb. 19 & 21, 2021

In April, the company will present the piano workshop of “The Secret River,” an opera with a libretto by Mark Campbell and music by Stella Sung. The opera is set in Central Florida during the Great Depression and focuses on the story of an African-American girl named Calpurnia, who will be interpreted by Kyaunnee Richardson. In the opera, Calpurnia will seek out a way to help her family and small town overcome the challenges of the financial collapse. The workshop will be presented at Harriet’s Orlando Ballet Centre.

Performance Dates: April 24, 2021

The series ends with Mark Campbell, Laura Kaminsky, and Kimberly Reed’s “As One,” which will feature Michael Kelly and Elise Quagliata. The showcase will be presented at Harriet’s Orlando Ballet Centre.

Performance Dates: May 21 & 23, 2021
