By David Salazar

Opera Omaha is set to produce “El último sueño de Frida y Diego” this May.

The production, which opens on May 3 and runs through the fifth, will be the first Spanish-language opera that the company produces. This is also the fourth production of the Gabriela Lena Frank and Nilo Cruz Opera and the first outside of California following its 2022 premiere.

The opera will be directed by Lorena Maza and conducted by Ilyich Rivas. The work stars Stephanie Sanchez and Levi Hernandez in the title roles. Laura León and César Aguilar round out the cast as Catrina and Leonardo, respectively.

Adjacent to the performances of the opera, Opera Omaha will be presenting exhibitions in collaboration with such organizations as El Museo Latino and South Omaha Immigrant History Museum on April 6 and 11, respectively. There will also be two “Opera in Conversation” sessions related to the work at the Joslyn Castle on April 16 and 23.
