Opera Colorado to present ‘Beyond the Blossom: Rethinking Madama Butterfly’
By Francisco SalazarOn April 8, Opera Colorado is set to present “Beyond the Blossom: Rethinking Madama Butterfly,” a live salon-style conversation.
The event is Pay What You Wish, with tickets starting at $0, making it accessible to anyone curious to join the discussion. First performed in 1904, “Madama Butterfly” is one of the most famous operas in the world, known for its sweeping music and devastating story of a young Japanese woman abandoned by an American naval officer.
The event will be presented ahead of the company’s May production and will bring together artists and thought leaders to explore the opera’s emotional power, its complicated history, and the questions it continues to raise about representation and cultural exchange.
The conversation will be led by Opera Colorado’s Ellie Caulkins General Director & CEO Barbara Lynne Jamison, joined by Nina Yoshida Nelsen, Artistic Director of Boston Lyric Opera and co-founder of the Asian Opera Alliance; and Margaret Ozaki Graves, Senior Director of Artistic Planning & Partnerships at Central City Opera.
In a statement Jamison said, “This is a story that many of us believe we know. But when we take a closer look, it opens up a much deeper dialogue about how stories are told and whose voices are centered.”
