Oper Wuppertal Names New Principal Conductor

Oper Wuppertal has appointed Yorgos Ziavras as its new Principal Conductor.

The 35-year-old Greek-German conductor joins the house after a tenure at Theater Krefeld/Mönchengladbach.

Ziavras opens his first season with the company on Nov. 29, 2025, leading Rossini’s “Il barbiere di Siviglia” and during the 2025–26 season, he will conduct five additional premieres.

Ziavras is the founder of ÉRMA Ensemble and CoGNiMUS Collektiv and has appeared with orchestras including Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal, Philharmonie Südwestfalen, the Greek National Opera, and the Greek National Radio Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to “Il barbiere di Siviglia,” Oper Wuppertal is set to present “Hansel and Gretel” starting on Nov. 22, 2025.
