Oper Köln Cancels Performance After Undetonated World War II Bombs Force City Evacuation
By Francisco SalazarOper Köln canceled its performance of Michael Krasznay-Krausz’s operetta “Eine Frau von Format” on June 4, 2025, due to the evacuation in Cologne after the discovery of three unexploded bombs dropped by allied forces during World War II.
According to reports, about 20,000 people had to leave their homes and businesses, while hotels, a care home for elderly people, and a hospital were evacuated.
Additionally, the Guardian reported that the discovery of the three bombs also led the city to close three bridges over the Rhine, and rail traffic was halted or diverted. The city also closed numerous schools, kindergartens, museums, and the tram network.
NPR reported that the three U.S. bombs from World War II were successfully defused within an hour after all residents were evacuated.
It’s not the first time that a large-scale evacuation is needed, as unexploded bombs dropped during wartime air raids have been found in Germany.
The opera house will return to its regular performances on June 5.
