On Site Opera Presents ‘The Immersive Coffee Cantata Experience—a reimagining of Bach’s Coffee Cantata’

By Afton Wooten

On Site Opera has announced its production of “The Immersive Coffee Cantata Experience—a reimagining of Bach’s Coffee Cantata.”

Bach’s short comic opera, “Coffee Cantata” (“Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht,” BWV 211) is set in the Zimmerman’s coffee house in Leipzig, Germany. It tells the story of Lieschen, sung by soprano Christine Lyons, (cover, Teryn Kuzma) a spirited young woman who adores her daily cups of coffee. However, her father, Schlendrian played by bass-baritone Philip Cokorinos disapproves of her caffeine indulgence.

The opera is a back- and-forth between daughter and father, aided by the Barista/Narrator, Joe, portrayed by tenor Bernard Holcomb. The production features a new English libretto and orchestration by Music Director Geoffrey McDonald.

Throughout the cantata the host, The Lost Draft Coffee Shop will offer coffee tasting. The show runs Feb. 14-24, 2024.
