Odyssey Opera to Present ‘Lysistrata’
By Francisco SalazarThe Odyssey Opera is set to present Mark Adamo’s “Lysistrata” in partnership with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project.
The presentation on Feb. 15 will be the Boston premiere at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall. The opera is Mark Adamo’s early-21st century hilarious take on the ancient satire written over 2000 years ago by Greek playwright Aristophanes.
Gil Rose leads an international cast including baritones John Moore and Kevin Deas, mezzo-sopranos Katherine Beck, Sandra Piques Eddy, and Lucy Schaufer, tenor David Portillo, and soprano Anya Matanovic playing the lead role of Lysistrata.
In a statement, Adamo said, “I love Lysistrata’s strut and wit and nerve, its utopian yearnings, its magical locale — an Acropolis where, by dream-logic, a handful of couples can reconcile the love of the battlefield with the battlefield of love.”
“Lysistrata” premiered 20 years ago in 2005 at the Houston Grand Opera and is Adamo’s second opera.
This presentation is Adamo and Gil Rose’s latest collaboration following a performance and recording of “The Lord of Cries.”
