Óður to Set World Record With Triple Opera Performance on Culture Night
By Afton WootenReykjavik’s Óður ensemble will break a world record during this year’s Culture Night by presenting three full-length operas in succession.
Soprano Sólveig Sigurðardóttir, tenor Þórhallur Auður Helgason, baritone Áslákur Ingvarsson, and bass Ragnar Pétur Jóhannsson will present back-to-back performances of Adam’s “Le postillon de Lonjumeau,” and Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale,” and “L’elisir d’amore.” They are joined at the piano by Sigurður Helgi and directed by Tómas Helgi Baldursson.
This marathon performance running from 1 pm to 10:30 pm is set to make history, as no group has ever performed three full-length operas consecutively in a single day. Performances are scheduled for Aug. 24 at the National Theatre in Reykjavik. The first performance starts at 1 pm, followed by performances at 4:30, and 8:30 pm. The ensemble has reached out to Guinness World Records with the hopes of having this feat officially recognized.
In 2023, Óður was recognized with a “Sprout of the Year” award at the Gríman Awards, a nomination for “Performer of the Year” at the 2024 Icelandic Music Awards, and the title of Reykjavik’s Art Group of the Year 2024. Their goal is to produce at least one new opera each year, with Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” scheduled to premiere in Dec. 2024.
