Welsh soprano Jennifer Rhys-Davies has passed away on the weekend of March 7, 2020, as confirmed by her daughter. While the exact cause of death is unknown, for the last several months, Rhys-Davies had battled an unspecified illness.

Born in Wales, Rhys-Davies studied at Trinity College of Music with the late Audrey Langford. In 1993 Rhys-Davies made her debut with the Royal Opera House of Covent Garden, playing the role of Berta in their production of “Il barbiere di Siviglia.” With the company, she would perform in works such as “Giulio Cesare in Egitto,” “ La Cenerentola,” “Der Rosenkavalier,” “Nabucco,” and more.

A proponent of modern works, Rhys-Davies’ credits include the world premiere of Kevin Volans’ “The Man Who Strides the Wind” with Almeida Opera, and “The Electrification of the Soviet Union” on tour with Music Theatre Wales.

Rhys-Davies will be remembered for her contributions to the performing arts in not only her native Wales, but the rest of the United Kingdom.
