Christian Gerhaher to Lead Winterreise Symposium in Montecastelli

By David Salazar

Baritone Christian Gerhaher will lead a symposium centered on Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise,” taking place in Montecastelli, Italy, from March 5 to 12, 2027.

The program, presented by Fondazione Science & Music, combines masterclasses, lectures, and concerts exploring the vocal and pianistic dimensions of Schubert’s song cycle. Gerhaher will work alongside pianist James Cheung throughout the seminar.

Lectures will be given on March 5, 7, and 10, including Gerhaher’s own talk on the self conception and financing of the arts, alongside presentations by Michael Bastian Weiß on aesthetics, ethics, and the relationship between music and morality, and Philipp Bonhoeffer on innovation. Seminars focused on poetics and declamation will follow on March 6, 9, and 11.

There will also be two concerts. On March 8, Gerhaher and Cheung will perform Othmar Schoeck’s “Elegie.” The symposium concludes on March 12 with a performance of “Winterreise” featuring the program’s active participants, accompanied by Cheung.
