Obituary: Rudolf Wasserlof Passes Away at 94

Bass-baritone Rudolf Wasserlof has passed away at the age of 94.

Wasserlof was born on Aug. 1, 1931, in Vienna. He studied at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna as well as the Max Reinhardt Seminar.

Wasserlof became a member of the Vienna Volksoper in 1973, where he was a member of the ensemble until 2011. He appeared in over 2,500 performances of opera, operettas, and musicals. He participated in 26 premieres and toured with the Volksoper on 13 international tours. He is featured on many opera recordings.

Outside of opera, Wasserlof took on acting engagements under the pseudonym Rudolf “Rudi” Walter. He appeared in several feature films and radio plays.

In 1987, he was awarded the professional title of Austrian Kammersänger, and in 1999, he received the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art. Wasserlof is an honorary member of the Vienna Volksoper.

Wasserlof died in Vienna on Nov. 11.
