Obituary: Romanian Bass Alexcandru Moisiuc Dies at 62

Alexcandru Moisiuc has died at the age of 62. The bass died in Timişoara, Romania on Feb. 20, 2024.

Born in Bucharest, Moisiuc completed his violin studies at the Enescu University of Music. He followed that by studying opera at the Porumbescu Music Academy in 1980.

In 1984, Moisiuc made his debut at the Bucharest National Opera in “Werther,” where he was engaged as a soloist, and in 1991, he was engaged at the Wiener Kammeroper as “Don Giovanni,” and went on a tour to Japan and South Korea with the Kammeroper.

He would become the first soloist at the National Opera in Temesvar and in 1994 he began a collaboration with the  Wiener Staatsoper, where he has been a soloist until 2020. With the company, Moisiuc sang over 60 different roles and was heard in over 600 performances in both the classical repertoire and contemporary operas. He last appeared on the State Opera stage on March 2, 2020, as Uncle Bonze in “Madama Butterfly.”

He also performed at such prestigious houses as the Teatro alla Scala, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Palais des Beaux-Artes in Brussels, and the Herodes Atticus in Athens

Moisiuc was also a singing teacher at the Bucharest Music Academy.
