Obituary: Pierre Strosser Dies at 82

Director Pierre Strosser passed away on April 16. He was 82.

Strosser was born in Saint-Louis, Germany, on May 25, 1943. He studied at the National Theatre School of Strasbourg.

In 1974, Strosser made his directorial debut at the Opéra du Rhin with “L’infedelta delusa.” He went on to direct numerous operatic works such as “La Clemenza di Tito” in 1983 and “Pelléas et Mélisande” in 1985 at the Opéra de Lyon. His “Pelléas et Mélisande” with John Eliot Gardiner, was revived on many occasions and was released on DVD.

Strosser also worked with opera companies such as Aix-en-Provence, Théâtre du Châtelet, State Opera of South Australia, and San Francisco Opera. Towards the end of his career, Strosser’s productions of “House of the Dead” and “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” won the Critics’ Prize (2007).

He is survived by his son, pianist Emmanuel Strosser. No arrangements have been made public at this time.
