Obituary: Mezzo-Soprano Kaja Borris Dies at 77

Dutch mezzo-soprano Kaja Borris has died at the age of 77.

Born on Jan. 8, 1939, Borris was born in The Hague and became an ensemble singer for the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

The mezzo performed with the company for three decades, starting in 1971, performing such roles as Filipyevna in Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin,” Frau Marthe Schwerdtlein in Gounod’s “Faust,” Wagner’s “The Flying Dutchman,” Azucena in “Il Trovatore,” and Erda in Wagner’s “The Ring Cycle.”

Borris said farewell to the stage in 2002. In total she performed she performed 1,337 times in 68 roles.

Throughout her career, Borris won such awards as the Berlin Theatre Community and the ‘Berliner Kammersängerin’ in 2001.

She left several recordings, including Schmidt’s “Notre Dame” and Zemlinsky’s “Kreidekreis.”
