Famed mezzo-soprano Doris Soffel was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on Oct. 27, 2025 in a ceremony led by Senator for Arts & Culture, Sarah Wedl-Wilson, on behalf of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The honor recognizes Soffel’s exceptional lifetime achievements and extraordinary contributions to German and international opera.

During several decades, Doris Soffel has not only deeply moved a Global Audience, but she has also, as a ‘Music  Ambassador,’ inspired and encouraged generations of young artists,” said Wedl-Wilson in her laudatio.

Soffel is one of Germany’s leading mezzo-sopranos, with a career spanning more than five decades. She has performed at major opera houses worldwide, including the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Salzburg Festival. In addition to her performance career, Soffel has been a dedicated mentor and teacher, nurturing emerging singers through masterclasses and coaching programs.
