
Obituary: Mezzo-Soprano Béatrice Uria-Monzon Passes at 61

The French mezzo was born on Dec. 28, 1963, in Agen, Lot-en-Garonne. She studied at the University of Bordeaux before joining the Centre national d’insertion professionnelle des artistes lyriques in Marseille, and the École d’art lyrique of the Paris Opera.
In 1987, Uria-Monzon began her career as a singer in 1987 and debuted at the Opéra national de Lorraine in 1989 as Cherubino in “Le Nozze di Figaro.”
From there, she would go on to perform at the Opéra National de Paris, Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, Teatro Colón, Opéra Royal de Wallonie, Teatro Massimo, Teatro Regio, Théâtre du Capitole, and Vienna State Opera, and Metropolitan Opera, among others.
Uria-Monzon headlined mezzo roles in such operas as “Werther,” “Hériodade,” “Don Quichotte,” “Le Cid,” “Les Troyens,” “La Damnation de Faust,” “Mignon,” “Hamlet,” “Samson et Dalila,” “Roberto Devereux,” and “Nabucco,” and “Aida.” In 2012, she took on the role of “Tosca.”
