Obituary: Leon Lovett Passes away at 91

Conductor Leon Lovett has passed away. He was 91.

Lovett studied music in Cambridge. Early in his career, he became the Assistant Conductor of the Scottish National Orchestra, and also conducted the Scottish Opera. In 1950, he co-founded the New Opera Company at Sadler’s Wells with Peter Hemmings and Brian Trowell. As Music Director of the New Opera Company, he conducted over 20 British opera premieres including Egk’s “Der Revisor,” Dallapiccola’s “Il prigioniero,” and Shostakovich’s “The Nose.”

In 1973, Lovett founded the London Oriana Choir. He led companies and ensembles such as The London Chorus, English Baroque Orchestra, and the City of Cambridge Symphony Orchestra. He appeared frequently on BBC radio and television, including “Proms.”
